What Is BaZi? Four Pillars Explained
BaZi, also called Four Pillars of Destiny, maps the year, month, day, and hour of birth into eight stem-and-branch characters. It is a traditional timing and pattern language—not a scientific diagnosis or a fixed verdict.

A reliable free BaZi calculator should disclose its calendar engine, year and month boundaries, late-Zi rule, time-zone handling, and what happens when birth time is unknown. A beautiful chart without these choices is not auditable.

The four pillars are not four isolated labels. Year often frames inherited and wider context, Month the seasonal and operating environment, Day the Day Master and close self-world, and Hour later expression, projects, or future-facing themes.

A BaZi chart is easiest to read as an ordered system: confirm the calendar choices, locate the Day Master, establish the seasonal Month Branch, inspect roots and Ten Gods, then add luck pillars. Reading a single symbol first produces confident but fragile conclusions.

You can still calculate a three-pillar BaZi chart when birth time is unknown, but the Hour Pillar should remain explicitly uncertain. The Year, Month, and Day pillars can support a bounded reading; claims that depend on the Hour Pillar should be left open.

Day Master Meaning: The Ten Heavenly Stems
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. It gives the reference point used to derive the Ten Gods and elemental relationships. It is an archetypal lens, not a complete personality type.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water describe relationships of generation, control, output, resource, and exchange. Element counts alone are misleading because season, roots, hidden qi, and position change their practical weight.

The Ten Gods are ten relationships between the Day Master and other stems: peers, resource, output, wealth, and authority, each divided by polarity. They describe functions and tensions, not moral categories.

Every Earthly Branch contains one or more hidden Heavenly Stems. Main, middle, and residual qi give roots and latent functions to the chart, which is why a simple eight-character surface count is incomplete.

Da Yun: How Ten-Year Luck Pillars Work
Da Yun adds sequential ten-year stem-and-branch contexts to the natal chart. It changes which relationships are emphasized, but it does not erase the natal structure or guarantee an event.

In BaZi, 2026 is the Bing-Wu annual pillar, often called the Fire Horse year. It is not a universal forecast. The useful question is how Bing Fire and Wu Fire interact with a specific natal chart and current Da Yun after the Li Chun boundary.
14 · METHOD GUIDEBaZi True Solar Time: When a Time Correction Matters
True solar time adjusts recorded civil clock time by location and the equation of time. It matters most when a recorded birth sits close to a two-hour pillar boundary, the 23:00 late-Zi change, or a solar-term boundary—not as a decorative precision setting.

BaZi for Career and Wealth: Read the Return Loop
BaZi cannot promise a job title, income, or investment return. It can organize how output, authority, wealth, resource, peers, and timing interact around contribution, exchange, pressure, and recovery.

Relationship reading is more useful as a map of expectations, communication, pressure, support, and timing than as a compatibility score. One spouse star or Day Branch cannot decide a relationship outcome.

A useful BaZi compatibility comparison does not reduce two people to one score. It compares each person’s Day Master, seasonal context, Ten God functions, and active luck cycles, then turns overlap and friction into concrete relationship conversations.

BaZi and Western astrology can start from the same birth moment but build different symbolic maps. BaZi uses stems, branches, Five Elements, Ten Gods, and luck pillars; Western astrology uses planets, zodiac signs, houses, aspects, and transits.

BaZi organizes elemental, Ten God, and luck-pillar relationships from four birth-time pillars. Zi Wei Dou Shu maps stars and transformations across twelve palaces. They share calendar inputs but answer questions through different structures.
